GLP-1 receptor agonists, like semaglutide and tirzepatide sold under brand names like Ozempic® and Mounjaro®, are ground-breaking tools when it comes to weight loss. These medications help regulate appetite, slow digestion, and support better blood sugar control.
But for the best immediate and long-term success, you should pair them with healthy lifestyle changes.
Here at our OB/GYN and primary practice, Yorktown Health, in Lombard, Illinois, our team prescribes GLP-1 medications to qualifying patients to help with weight loss and health.
If you’re using a GLP-1 medication for weight loss, we recommend a few key lifestyle adjustments to maximize your results and improve your overall health.
Since GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, you need to prioritize high-quality, nutrient-dense foods to fuel your body.
Choose quality, lower fat proteins like chicken, fish, tofu, and eggs to support lean mass retention. Load up on fiber-rich foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, to aid digestion and prevent constipation, a common side effect of these medications.
Avoid processed foods, added sugars, and refined carbs, which can spike your blood sugar levels and hinder weight loss progress.
Proper hydration is essential, especially since GLP-1 medications slow digestion and may lead to nausea. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to aid digestion and prevent dehydration, and limit caffeinated and carbonated drinks, which can irritate your stomach.
If you do experience dizziness or fatigue, try electrolyte-rich fluids like coconut water and bone broth to ease symptoms.
Exercise enhances the effects of GLP-1 medications by helping with fat loss, muscle preservation, and metabolic health. Aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, such as walking, cycling, or swimming.
Some of that work includes strength training to maintain muscle mass. Always listen to your body when exercising. If you feel dizzy or weak, back off or stop for the day.
Slower digestion can lead to bloating, constipation, or mild nausea. Supporting gut health while you’re on GLP-1 medications can make a big difference. Make it a point to include probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut to support digestion.
If you’re not used to a lot of fiber, add it gradually to avoid bloating, and drink plenty of water. If you do experience constipation, consider magnesium supplements or a fiber supplement; we can recommend the right type for you.
GLP-1 medications can help with weight loss, but they aren’t a magic fix. Lasting results come from consistent habits. Build a sustainable routine that includes movement, balanced meals, and mindful eating, even after stopping the medication.
